Services to Adults
Literacy development classes were provided throughout Wake County in partnerships with the North Carolina Community College System Office, the North Carolina Department of Correction, the Wake County Department of Human Services, SAFEchild, Inc., and Wake County SmartStart. Of those people served, a total of 223 students attended Motheread/Fatheread classes in community and correctional settings, and 317 students received instruction in special topic literacy classes. A total of 13,949 instructional hours were provided to these students. Following an average of 46 hours of instruction, students who were pre and post-tested improved an average of 1.58 grade levels on CASAS and 1.1 on BEST.
Services to Children
A Wake County SmartStart family literacy initiative continued for families with 82 children receiving instruction associated with their parents’ literacy classes. In partnership with Meredith College and community volunteers, 103 people provided a total of 2,060 hours of reading and literacy support services.
Services to Childcare Professionals
A professional development program for Wake County childcare providers was conducted with funding from Wake County SmartStart. Twenty-three trainings were provided in 16 childcare centers. A total of 142 teachers were served with 124 completing all program requirements and 99% improving in read-aloud strategies and literacy development activities. More than 1,100 children were taught by these teachers.
