Prisons

Since its inception, Motheread, Inc. has helped incarcerated mothers improve their literacy skills and use books to connect with their children. Our programming reaches mothers, grandmothers, aunts, expectant and first-time mothers, and mothers recovering from drug and/or alcohol addiction.  We currently teach classes using our Motheread/Fatheread curriculum in in Wake County (North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women ) and in two nearby North Carolina facilities (Eastern Correctional Institution and Southern Correctional Institution).  We also use our Birth and Beginning Years (B.A.B.Y.) curriculum with expectant and new mothers to prepare and support them as individuals and long-distance caregivers.  Our Literacy Instruction for Everyone (Life) classes serve inmates with developmental disabilities.
